LICENCES ISSUED FROM 19 JAN 2013
If you have a license issued from 19 Jan 2013 you can tow a small trailer weighing no more than 750kg. if the total weight of your vehicle, trailer and all their contents are less than 3,500kgs. If you want to tow anything heavier then you will need to pass the B+E test.
LICENSES HELD BEFORE JAN 1997
If you passed your car driving test before 1997 you are normally allowed to tow a trailer with a combined total weight with the vehicle of 8,250kg.
LICENCES ISSUED FROM 01 JAN 1997
If you passed your car driving test between 01/01/1997 and 19/01/2013 you can tow a trailer up-to 750kg with a towing vehicle weight of 3,500kg. You can also tow a heavier trailers as long as you keep the total weight of your vehicle, trailers and all their contents below 3,500kg. If you want to tow anything heavier then you will need to pass the B+E test.
On completion of the towing course you will be allowed to tow a variety of trailers including horse, caravan, box, boats and plant machinery.
General rule of thumb – only tow up to 85% of vehicles?? weight – always consult your vehicles handbook.
